Have you wondered about the differences between Western medicine, and homeopathy?
Ever since I read The Complete Idiot's Guide to Homeopathy about seven years ago, especially the Table on page 276, I've been collecting, refining, and expanding on all the differences between homeopathy and Western medicine. Would you like to see my collection in easy-to-understand format?
Homeopathy vs. Western Medicine
A comparison of homeopathy and Western medicine is found in the following chart:
| Comparison |
Homeopathy |
Western Medicine |
| Symptoms* |
body's attempt to activate the vital force towards cure |
body's announcement that there is sickness that needs to be cured |
| The interview |
goal to find the individual's unique symptom picture in the illness |
based on the general symptoms of the illness |
| Treatment* |
different remedies for different patients' expressions of the disease |
same treatment for most patients |
| Approach |
no magic bullet exists |
magic bullet exists for each disease (pharmaceutical approach) |
| Goal of treatment* |
health without the use of medications |
health with continued use of medicines |
| Health* |
physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being |
the absence of disease |
| Satisfaction |

the health care consumer is often dissatisfied |
| Cost |

no unified theory – differs by body system |
| Mechanism of action |
"memory of water," cutting-edge physics of water |
concrete mechanism of action based on the atomic theory |
| Focus |
on the whole person (holistic) |
on the disease (partistic) |
| Practitioner |

subspecialty care, by system, by age group |
| Outcome |
cure often occurs |
chronic, relapsing conditions |
| Toxicity of treatments |
non-toxic, gentle, non-addictive |
may be toxic, may be addictive |
| Potency |
less is more (the more a remedy is diluted and succussed, the more the curative power is increased while simultaneously decreasing toxicity) |
more is more (the more potent the medicine, the more drug it contains, and the more toxic it becomes, with increasing side effects) |
| Suppression |
no suppression – deep cure on cellular level |
suppression – the disease disappears if the symptoms disappear |
| Laws of treatment |
The Law of Similars |
The Law of Contraries |
| Drug experimentation |

Have you wondered about Dr. Feingold's new book on self-care using homeopathy?
I have been a medical doctor, a board-certified pediatrician, for close to 40 years and a practicing homeopath for 12. During the last decade, I've come to realize that teaching responsible self-care using homeopathy, herbal medicines, and nutritional supplements is my "higher purpose" in life. My new book, The Complete Self-Care Guide to Homeopathy, Herbal Remedies and Nutritional Supplements, does just that.
The Complete Self-Care Guide to Homeopathy, Herbal Remedies and Nutritional Supplements, by Dr. Ellen Feingold has just been published by Whitston Publishing Company. The book is available for purchase at www.amazon.com and www.Whitston.com for $24.95.
Following is the entire Table of Contents from The Complete Self-Care Guide to Homeopathy, Herbal Remedies and Nutritional Supplements, by Dr. Ellen Feingold.

Have you wondered why homeopathy in the U.S. today seems to be practiced by so few practitioners, compared to Western medicine?
If it's true that homeopathy is gentle, effective, safe, without side effects, (and it is true), then how did Western medicine get the upper hand? The answer to this conundrum lies in power and politics. The history of homeopathy's sad descent into distant second place is so well-written in Dana Ullman's new book, The Homeopathic Revolution, Why Famous People and Cultural Heroes Choose Homeopathy.
A large part of the answer as to why and how homeopathy lost its primacy of place to Western medicine in this country is based on a survey of the state of medical education at the beginning of the twentieth century, called The Flexner Report. The author of the Flexner report was anti-homeopathy and sided with the American Medical Association which wanted to limit the number of doctors practicing medicine. This, of course, had only one purpose, to increase the money each doctor would earn. Although couched in altruistic terms, there is no doubt that the driving force was greed. In the 20 years after the influential and damaging Flexner Report was published, the number of homeopathic medical schools in the U.S. decreased from 22 to just two.
(Adapted from Dana Ullman's book, The Homeopathic Revolution, Why Famous People and Cultural Heroes Choose Homeopathy (North Atlantic Books).
Today, with the increased interest in homeopathy as first-rate medical science, we are in the process of remedying that situation. Among the homeopathic medical schools in this country, the newest is The American College of Homeopathy at www.AMCofH.org.
Please take a moment to look at what's new at The American College of Homeopathy.

Have you wondered about all the differences within the homeopathic community in this country?
Have you wanted to know what "classical" or "non-classical" homeopathy means? No matter which type of homeopathic practitioner you choose, you will get holistic medicine. That means that You, The Patient, as a whole person, is taken into account. It's not possible for a homeopath, no matter which type of homeopathy she practices, to ignore your headaches, for instance, or your warts, if you've come primarily about your arthritis. Everything in each patient has meaning for the homeopath.
Homeopathy may be practiced in different ways. In "classical homeopathy" the homeopath determines, based upon the extensive and intensive homeopathic interview, which single remedy best fits the totality of the patient's symptoms. The homeopath tries to determine the simillimum. Classical homeopathy often follows constitutional prescribing, meaning that the remedy, most often a polychrest, suits a patient because the patient falls into a certain constitutional type that is best expressed by a certain remedy.
In "non-classical homeopathy," the homeopath may prescribe several homeopathic remedies at one time, very often repeating them, for instance, each remedy taken on a different day, once a week. This is the type of homeopathy I practice. In addition, I combine herbal remedies and nutritional supplements with my homeopathic prescriptions. And it is likely, as my patient, you will get some of my comments concerning your lifestyle issues, like eating and exercise, to go with your remedies, as an integral part of my prescription for you.
Adapted from Dr. Ellen Feingold's new book, The Complete Self-Care Guide to Homeopathy, Herbal Remedies, and Nutritional Supplements, published by Whitston Publishing Company, 2008, pp.27.
-
Have you wondered what the homeopathic interview is like?
The Homeopathic Interview is the most important instrument that the homeopath uses to determine which remedy, or remedies, would be best suited to the patient's whole self. The Homeopathic Interview is a series of questions that are designed to elicit the patient's story, uniting all aspects of the self, what I call the Five Spheres of Human Functioning:
- Physical
- Emotional
- Intellectual
- Spiritual
- Sexual
Here's an excerpt from the talk that Dr. Feingold will deliver at the Third Annual Joint American Homeopathic Conference in Warwick, Rhode Island, on April 12, 2008. If you would like to attend that conference, please register at www.nationalcenterofhomeopathy.org. Feingold's seminar is especially geared for beginners to homeopathy.
The most important high-tech-tool the homeopath uses to gather information about her patients is her ears.
Homeopaths gather information by listening.
It's called taking the case.
The most important tool the Western doctor uses to gather information about her patients is lab results or imaging studies.
That's because Western medicine is not patient-centered.
It's laboratory-centered.
The Western approach is disease-centered.
Western doctors treat laboratory results.
Homeopaths treat patients.
The homeopathic approach is patient-centered.
The homeopath builds a picture of the patient by putting all the building blocks into place.
What are the homeopath's building blocks?
The building blocks are the questions and answers to questions on the homeopathic interview.
The homeopath's best friend is the homeopathic interview.
Together, the answers form the totality of our patient's case.
The tool the homeopath uses in taking the case is the homeopathic interview.
The Western approach to medicine is disease-centered.
The totality of the patient hardly matters.
The homeopathic approach to medicine is patient-centered.
It is a holistic medicine.
Western medicine is the opposite of holistic. (partistic; parts-specific).
